ELITE EIGHT PREVIEW

Pendleton Convention Center,  March 4-7, 2009

Courtesy of Alan Dale – Lake County Examiner.

Team: LAKEVIEW HONKERS

Quarterfinal Opponent: Knappa

State Ranking: #12

Record: 19-7

League: Southern Cascade League

Streak: WON 5

How they qualified for Elite Eight: Won at Heppner 66-51

2008-2009 Record vs. Elite Eight: 0-0

2008 Elite Eight Result: 0-2 record

Starters: Matt Clemens (SR), Kasey Clemens (SR), Jonathan Squires (SR), Andy Pardue (SR), Shylo St. Clair (SR)

Comment: A five-game winning streak has wiped away the memory of a tough second round stretch in Southern Cascade League play. The Honkers have arguably played their best basketball over the past two weeks and the hope is they are peaking with some room left to spare before hitting their ceiling. Their athleticism and ability to get up and down the court are pluses, but will their inconsistent free throw shooting hurt them in the clutch? Defensively, they may need to exert more physicality against the elite 2A teams that should present a step up in class. Either way, it’s their hope to win that game that neither they nor the Loggers managed to during their appearances in 2008. If Kasey Clemens keeps hitting from outside, Jonathan Squires asserts himself down low, Matt Clemens makes the correct passes, Shylo St. Clair can hit his shots from a lot closer than 50 feet and the rest of the Honkers contribute their share, anything can happen.

Team: DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC KNIGHTS

Quarterfinal Opponent: Pilot Rock

State Ranking: #2

Record: 21-5

League: NORTHWEST

Streak: WON 1

How they qualified for Elite Eight: Won at Salem Academy 74-64

2008-2009 Record vs. Elite Eight: 3-3

2008 Elite Eight Result: Finished in 6th Place

Top Players: PG Donta Harris (Sr. 18.8 ppg, 2-time NW Player of the Year), F Royshad Curry (Jr.), F Terrance Kendrick (Sr.), P Robert Auger (Jr. 6-4).

Comment: One of three teams to come out of the Northwest League, De La Salle should be favored to win their quarterfinal match-up. They are able to win via high-scoring approaches (five games of 80 or more points) and low-point grind outs (7-4 record when scoring 65 or less). The Knights could be the forgotten team and that may be a mistake since they've been here before and could benefit from their 2008 visit to Pendleton.

Team: EAST LINN CHRISTIAN EAGLES

Quarterfinal Opponent: Portland Christian

State Ranking: #11

Record: 15-13

League: TRI RIVER

Streak: WON 2

How they qualified for Elite Eight: Defeated Central Linn 55-48

2008-2009 Record vs. Elite Eight: 0-3

2008 Elite Eight Result: Did not qualify

Top Players:  G Kyle Kruesi (Sr., TRiver Player of the Year), G Jonathan Whitehead, G Kyle Moore, P Keagan McParlin (Sr.)

Comment: An average team that got hot when it counted. East Linn Christian goes to Pendleton with the field's worst record and without a win against teams in the field. As wonderful it is to cheer an underdog the truth remains...they got bombed by the Royals earlier in the season and does anyone think the defending champions are going to get surprised by a team that scored less than 50 points 10 times? That's what I thought. Two and out for these wingless Eagles.

Team: KNAPPA LOGGERS

Quarterfinal Opponent: Lakeview

State Ranking: #3

Record: 22-5

League: NORTHWEST

Streak: Won 4

How they qualified for Elite Eight: Beat Monroe 95-34

2008-2009 Record vs. Elite Eight: 5-2

2008 Elite Eight Result: 0-2 record

Top Players: P Jesse Moreland (Sr.), Nate Boardman (Sr.), Teven Klasuer (Jr.), Steve Tadei (Sr.), Mitch Cokley (Fr.)

Comment: The Loggers may be the pre-tournament favorite, even over Western Mennonite (owning a 73-57 win over the Pioneers). They've scored over 70 points, 15 times and hit for 90-plus on a half-dozen occasions. They have also shown an ability to win low-scoring games. However in all five losses they scored 50-or-less points, so it could behoove the Honkers to slow down their quarterfinal matchup, or maybe they can beat the Loggers at their own game? Either way this clash could wrap up quarterfinal play Wednesday

Team: OAKLAND OAKERS

Quarterfinal Opponent: Western Mennonite

State Ranking: #7

Record: 23-4

League: MOUNTAIN VIEW

Streak: Won 3

How they Qualified for Elite Eight: Defeated St. Mary's 42-32

2008-2009 Record vs. Elite Eight: 0-1

2008 Elite Eight Result: Finished in 4th Place

Top Players: F Tyler Fugate (Sr. 6-3), G Nathan Adams (Sr.), F Coleton Baker (Sr. 6-3), P Jason Derby (Sr. 6-6)

Comment: Oakland is a familiar face to Honkers' hoops followers, having beaten Lakeview in last year's tournament. Now the Oakers will hope to get some revenge against a Western Mennonite team that made Oakland possibly doubt its place amongst the elite. This team arrives at Pendleton following the elimination of the maddeningly overachieving St. Mary’s boys and has shown the ability to win low-scoring games or ones in the low 60s, to high 70s. A break here and there and Oakland may sneak into the final but don't count on it even though this is a new set off starters from last year it should be the more things change, the more they stay the same for the Oakers.

Team: PILOT ROCK ROCKETS

Quarterfinal Opponent: De La Salle North Catholic

State Ranking: #8

Record: 22-2

League: BLUE MOUNTAIN

Streak: WON 12

How they qualified for Elite Eight: Beat Oakridge 62-54

2008-2009 Record vs. Elite Eight: 0-0

2008 Elite Eight Result: Did not qualify

Top Players: Chance Brady (Sr., Blue Mountain Player of the Year), Shane Laszinka (Jr), Jeremiah Grosjaques (Sr.)

Comment: Should be considered the hottest team entering the quarterfinals. But is that because they haven't played anybody formidable during their 12-game winning streak? The best team they've played since 2009 started is a Heppner team that Lakeview took to the clinic and left there. The Rockets are one of two teams not to face another of the Elite Eight (Lakeview being the other) and either that could hurt them competition-wise or could create a fresh approach without preconceived notions? Still, they beat Heppner three times by a combined 23 points and LHS could have won by that much if a few more free throws rolled in. Rockets are two and out in their first appearance at state since 1989. Yet could being 12-miles from Pendleton allow for a much needed homecourt advantage that could rear its head?

Team: PORTLAND CHRISTIAN ROYALS

Quarterfinal Opponent: East Linn Christian

State Ranking: #6

Record: 17-7

League: NORTHWEST

Streak: Won 2

How they qualified for Elite Eight: Won at Chiloquin 48-44

2008-2009 Record vs. Elite Eight: 2-4

2008 Elite Eight Result: DEFENDING STATE CHAMPION

Top Players: F Chris Workman (Sr. 6-4, 17 ppg), P Ryan Miller (Sr., 6-5, 15.7 ppg), F Vance Downey (Jr, 6-3), PG Tommy Niebergall (Jr, missed five games due to injury)

Comment: They may be defending state champions but things haven't come as easy in '09. Fellow Northwest competitors Knappa took the season series and the Royals seem to have trouble putting up points, keeping scores low. But remember, they do still own the ring so until someone proves they can take it from them, Portland Christian has to be reckoned with. They also celebrate the return of their point guard who missed a quarter of the team’s games toward the tail end of the year so that alone could carry them to the final.

Team: WESTERN MENNONITE PIONEERS

Quarterfinal Opponent: Oakland

State Ranking: #1

Record: 26-1

League: TRI RIVER

Streak: Won 2

How they qualified for Elite Eight: Defeated Union 100-59

2008-2009 Record vs. Elite Eight: 4-1

2008 Elite Eight Result: Lost in State Final to Portland Christian

Top Players: Geoffrey Martin (Sr.), Tayler Branch (Jr.), Pierre Zook (Soph.), Lewis Menges (Sr.), Jared Garza (Sr.)

Comment: The Pioneers were cruising and 25-0 before getting stomped at Knappa. Before the loss they might have been the pre-tournament favorites, but it may be silly to remove that tag just yet. Earlier in the season they laid the lumber on their quarterfinal opponents Oakland 59-36 and if their loss was a wake up call, could repeat the feat. However, if their two contests following the Knappa game are any indicator, the Pioneers may be in that title game after all.
